John Moses Browning created the Browning Auto 5, also known as the Browning A5, in 1898. It was patented in 1900 and began to be produced commercially in 1902. It has the distinction of being the first semi-automatic shotgun to be mass-produced. The A5 has a 5+1-round magazine capacity. In order to adhere to certain US hunting restrictions, the majority of firearms were equipped with magazine plugs that only allowed two bullets to be loaded. This shotgun was produced in a range of calibers and was a huge hit with sportsmen; most were in 12- and 20-bore, but there was also a 16-bore version known as the Sweet Sixteen. The military utilized the Browning A5 from World War I to Vietnam and beyond. The A5 production ended in 1998, but the company relaunched the Browning A5 in 2013. There are many models available. There is a choice of barrel lengths, and stock materials range from Grade 3 walnut to a synthetic camouflage finish. There are 2+1 or 4+1 magazine capacities available, and internal chokes are standard.
