One lever action that has withstood the test of time is the Browning Lever Rifle (BLR). A modernized version of John Browning's lever-action heritage, the BLR continues to draw hunters more than 50 years after its first launch in 1971. The Browning BLR lever action rifle combines the inherent strength and precision of a bolt action with all the exquisite attributes of a good lever action. Multiple locking lugs on the bolt head revolve into the breech end of the barrel to generate a very robust action, making the BLR basically a "lever-operated bolt action." Finger jams are eliminated by the rack and pinion operating system's ability to move the trigger together with the lever. The receiver has a fully enclosed bolt head, a good trigger mechanism, and is drilled and tapped for scope attachments. It also has a hammer half-cock safety. Four rounds can fit in the magazine when using typical calibers. The Lightweight (short action) variant features a checkered stock made of American walnut, a Schnabel forend, a 20-inch barrel, and a deep blue finish. Standard iron sights can be adjusted. The forend design does away with the need for barrel bands, while the detachable box magazine permits the employment of pointed bullets. Depending on the caliber, there are models with long and short actions. The Browning BLR is a lever action rifle that is incredibly dependable, accurate, and simple to use. For the large game hunter in North America, it offers a great balance of simplicity of use, quick follow-up shots, lots of power, and a range of practical applications.
