The Smith and Wesson company designed and introduced M&P (Military and Police) pistols in 2005, for law enforcement at first, but soon they became popular among civilians as well. The new line represents further expansion and a combination of the S&W Sigma and S&W SW99 popular models, with an improved trigger design, upgraded ergonomics, and other modern improvements like a Picatinny rail, a higher beaver-tailed grip, etc. A polymer frame is strengthened with a stainless-steel chassis, while the barrel and slide are made of stainless steel with Tenifer finishes. A low slide profile keeps the barrel axis closer to the shooter’s hand, which reduces muzzle rise and increases the speed of repeated aiming. The M&P pistols are double-action-only and highly customizable to meet everyone’s needs. In terms of safety, the M&P features an internal lock mechanism, magazine disconnect, and a new trigger design that prevents accidental firing - the gun won’t fire unless the trigger is fully pressed. Models with an additional external thumb safety are available since 2009. The M&P pistols are available in a variety of calibers, like 9x19 Parabellum, .357 SIG, 380 or .45 ACP, and more. The barrel lengths vary between 3.1 and 5 inches, which means there are full-size and compact/subcompact sizes as well. All models come with the standard iron sights of three-dot type, which are dove-tailed and adjustable. The capacity of the magazine also depends on the exact model, but there are 10-round versions of each pistol available in the states with restriction rules. In November 2021, Smith and Wesson introduced the M&P M2.0 chambered in 10mm Auto. The latest addition to the M&P line is a 5.7x28mm variant, introduced in January 2023.
