With the numerous 1911s it has produced over the years, Colt has acquired a lot of knowledge and skill in the construction of the pistol that Browning designed. The 1911 Competition Government was warmly welcomed when it was unveiled to the gun press in November 2015. The Special Combat Government Model O, or the Competition 80 Series, which was originally a Colt Custom Shop build and sold in the 1990s, served as a base model for a new competition model, and it included a throated barrel, eight-round magazines, flared magwells and ejection ports, a cut-out hammer, a skeletonized trigger, a Bo-Mar rear sight, a Clark dovetail front sight, and custom optimizing. Today, Colt offers customers field-ready pistols chambered in .45, 9mm, or .38 Special, in blued, stainless, titanium, and Plus (two-toned) finishes. All variations are with dual recoil springs, a National Match barrel, custom G10 Grips, an upswept beavertail grip safety, an undercut trigger guard, a grip safety, and Novak adjustable fiber optic sights. The newest Competition versions have a crisp 70 Series trigger set and give minimal recoil, as opposed to the older 80 Series pistols.
