The BPS shotgun, also known as the Browning Pump Shotgun, was the "first" pump to bear the Browning name. That fact obscures the significant and ongoing contributions to firearm design made possible by the brilliance of John Moses Browning, America's greatest gun designer. Even the bottom-ejecting feature was not new. Browning aimed to develop a modern shotgun with a single port at the base of the receiver for both loading and ejecting shells. He brought this into being in a number of other firearms, including the Remington Model 31, but it was the BPS that gave the design to the Browning name. The shotgun also has an 8-inch slide for the pump, and it has aggressive and functional texturing. The BPS was first produced in 12 gauge, but it is now produced in all gauges from 10 to .410, as well as special slug, turkey, and trap versions. Walnut, synthetic, and camouflage variations are also available.
