The only force that part deals with is from a spring, I would think it'd be fine. Really, my concerns would be debris getting caught up in there. Maybe a low mass carrier is good for sub sonic ammo?

Dunno, but in terms of structure the part that takes the beating is on top.

Have to agree but, if I'm going to shave a few ounces, I can think of better ways than bird-caging a primary part that takes the most abuse in an AR other than probably the barrel.
