Flat, the AK market is no longer inexpensive. Between import bans and parts shortages, prices have shot up about 40% over the last year.
For the price of a 'starter AK' one can get a good rifle like a colt on sale.

Great price, lowest instock price I could find on this was $699.99 @ Gander Mtn. Got this from Whittakers Guns for $596 incl shipping.

Thunderking,

What's your personal experience with the Eagle 15, M&P Sport II Or a Colt 6920 (harkening closer to the $900 price range)?

TY, sorry i didnt reply sooner, i just seen this. Anyways, i own a 6920 and a Spikes ST15 and so far the Ruger has been just as reliable as both other rifles.
I put about 3000 rounds threw the Ruger and have had no real hang ups.
So far i have no complaints and am happy with the purchase.

If you have been on the fence about getting this rifle, get off it and get it.
The price on the Ruger has been creeping upwards for while now and with elections coming, good luck finding this rifle at a reasonable price.
Should Clinton win, 'budget M4s' will be $1000 and up.
Get it now while you can.

Did S&W change their grip and front sight? My M&P came with an A2 grip and the sight block didn't have the cutout on the front sight...these look different.

Awesome pricing, free 30-day membership. Picked up three, good luck finding an AR south of $1,000 when we near the election.

In the sub $600 range, this is hands down the best AR/M4 out there.
If for whatever reason you have been waiting to get a AR, nows the time to get it and buy the Ruger.
The AR556 Ruger will preform just as well as $900 ARs.

Yeah the people who bought them during the brief price dip at $515 or so practically stole theirs. It's hard to build a decent AR at this price point.

I just ordered this yesterday (Tuesday afternoon). They have a free trial of their buyers club, so with that the price came to $562.63 shipped. This is the second gun I've bought from Sportsmans Guide, and for the second time their shipping is moving fast. I got confirmation of shipment today (Wednesday) saying it will be delivered Friday.

Can't say much for the rifle yet, but I love the seller.

BONUS: Use your Buyers Club free trial combined with the free shipping promo codes listed here to score some great ammo and/or accessories for your new rifle at a helluva good price!

Anyone ever use the "4-pay plan"? I wonder if a mastercard debit check card will work? I don't own an actual credit only card...

I use my Debit all the time with 4 pay, no problem.

Another update. I ordered a Vortex Strike Eagle and an Aero Precision extended mount. Really curious to see if the A2 sight will co-witness or be bothersome. Stay tuned.

0 votes
0 votes

Co-witnessing is all dependent on the mount. Co-witnessing with an A2 versus an F-Marked front sight only requires spinning in the sight until you get it zeroed. I can't remember exactly but on mine it was something like 6 turns in.

Probably shipping damage or from the dealer, handling damage etc. I highly doubt Ruger would send out a damaged rifle as you describe....might have even been an in store display? Idk, had decent luck with sportsman's but who knows

I bought the Ruger from them, but I wish they sell the S&W for the same price

Sport 2 has been available off and on from Whittaker for 499.00
Unless you must have a Ruger, or have to have an AR NOW, no reason to spend more,,,

Another update: picked up the rifle last night. Came home and immediately put a UTG Quad rail (MTU001) on with ladders, so smooth! Was at the range today and it did amazing! Zero recoil, no misfires or jams at 100 rounds. Can't be happier with my purchase.

Thank you to Sportsman's Guide for another excellent deal on a quality AR. With the 4-pay option and shipping of $4.99 the total came to $562.63 on April 14th, 2016. Came with a pmag and a rear sight assembly. Jump on this deal while you can because if Benghazi or Bernout gets elected it will be back to 1994 all over again.

***update 4/21/16***
Ruger 556 arrived as promised in excellent new condition. Bolt carrier key was not properly staked a quick once over with the Brownells bolt carrier key staking tool and we're all set. Nice budget build with a flip up rear right. Aimpoint PRO optic and you can mall ninja away ad-infinitum.

In a shtf scenario, wouldn't the sport's nitrided barrel be a better option?

0 votes
0 votes

I have both, chrome and nitride. The nitride is easier to clean, and I like how it's finished on the outside of the barrel, but it heats up much faster and stays hot longer than my CHF chrome barrel. The POI changes after the first few shots with the nitrided barrel as it heats, and it loses accuracy faster than my chrome one. In a SHTF scenario you'd probably want chrome. *This is just MY experience. I'm not Larry Vickers; so your mileage may vary.*

Damn, I paid $20 more for mine about two months ago! Not the biggest deal but I could have gotten an extra two magazine with that money. Anyway, I love this rifle. It's my first AR and it's hard to imagine there's a better quality beginner AR out there for this kind of money. It was sighted perfectly, ready for action right out of the box. Would recommend to anyone.

Ok another update... Purchased the firearm on April 14, 9 AM. I called today, April 15 to make sure it went through which it did. The 4 pay breaks down to $139.41 per month but the first month's charge is $144.40 because of the $4.99 Firearm fee. The charge shows on my credit card as pending and I was told the rifle will be shipped Monday.

Hey!
Just wanted to say that I made a purchase of this Ruger AR556 this morning and I can provide updates as I receive it. I do want to say that I have researched ARs extensively... From Colt to FN... From barrel twists to their finish. Their stocks, their rails, trigger and what not. Although Ruger is fairly new, it is the best first time AR.
Even Colt is not what it used to be, look at the Expanse. It lacks dust cover and forward assist although you can install it but why make a budget AR without those things. Ruger forced M&P II out of smith and Wesson yet Colt makes the same mistake. Also, Colt Expanse's barrel isn't chrome lined just like Ruger and S&W but offers a 1/7 twist which is not as big of a deal it is being made out to be.
I say buy this for play and pick up a premium rifle such as LE6920 or FN-15 later on.

FYI: I choose the 4 Pay option and called them to inquire about it. Sportmansguide will ship as soon as the first payment is deducted. The whole process relies on a credit check.

Tiger108: right now is a buyers market. Why build an AR especially in the price range you describe when you can buy one fully assembled with support and in Ruger's case no warranty but they make everything sent back to them whole again. You can buy a Colt 6920 with no furniture for $720 on here. If the weapon has lives depending on it get the Colt 6920. Otherwise you can get a good deal on an AR like this one or a S&W MPII sport or an Eagle Arms (Armalite) M15 or an Anderson AR-15. If it's your life make it a Colt or an FN.

Thx, You have given me some more points to consider/reconsider. I'll keep an eye out for a bit longer and see if anything fits my purpose better. :)

It's been a while since I looked into Ruger for an AR platform, how does the current quality compare to PSA or Colt? Decent accuracy?
Is the lower compatible (fitwise) with most standard uppers? I know some wonky lowers leave a small gap or don't fit quite perfectly.
I was leaning towards building a decent $600-700 PSA, Should I jump on this instead?
Any insight from those who have experience with this rifle is GREATLY appreciated!

I haven't seen many negative reviews so my case my be rare.. I received my Ruger Ar556 and it had extreme amount of side to side wobble between the upper and lower receiver. I think there's others out there who have reported these issues and although I know some play is normal this was seriously abnormal amount of play. It also arrived with a chipped and damaged safety selector on the actual part of the lower not the actual selector but deep where the selector rests into the safety. kinda hard to explain without pics. I'm sure the qc issues Rugers been having with some of these is because its new and of the high demand. Like I said my case may be rare. At any rate it left a bad taste in my mouth and I just wanted to get rid of it at that point and to make a long story short I ended up selling it for a profit and ended up purchasing something different. So I'd say its a risk buying one online that you may get a lemon or one with quality control issues. Just my experience with this purchase. I normally have good luck with SportsmansGuide orders so not necessarily blaming them.

Good gun. Bought it for $600. I've added a 3.5lb fat boy tactical l trigger. Ive had it for about 7 mos and have shot close to 3000 rounds. I have not had one malfunction. Shot mostly all 55 and 62 gr federal 556. I would recommend this to anyone at this price, especially for a first AR.

I bought this rifle last month for $557 + $5 or $19 shipping from SG

Big run on guns today following the death of Scalia, this is probably a good buy right now and will be a great buy soon IMHO.

I am sure the shipping is a rip since they don't seem to publish it.

I noticed you always post on the leftmost side comment. Are you aware you can click the "reply" link to continue the conversation without breaking it up all over the screen?

For example, in your post above, you make a statement, then ask two questions. It is unclear of whom you are asking the question.

Really happy with Sportsman's guide service with my purchase but mine did come with a few factor defects. My safety selector switch arrived defective with poor machining on the detent that holds the switch on safe and a few other minor problems.
Ruger is in the process of making it right for me tho so not worried about it. I'm sure it has to do with the fact the demand is so high for this rifle so qc can be a hit or miss sometimes. Either way I don't regret making the purchase and couldn't be happier with SG for having a great price and fast shipping.

If anyone is interested in adding a great upgrade look into Strike industries. I have to give them a shout out for making a quality product that competes with magpuls. I installed their handguard on both of mine and my girlfriends and we love it. And yes better fit, quality, and look compared to magpul.

0 votes
0 votes

No. That's another reason why I prefer this over the magpuls. Some people may not like the fact it doesn't cover it because they don't care but I love the fact I can still use that feature. Some people will have a difficult time installing it cause it is a tight fit that takes some technique to install. But once its in it is perfect. I've done two so far and no sanding down or problems at all. I'll try to share some pics soon.

Thanks Stacking999

Mine gets delivered today. I bought it direct and shipping was only $3.13! Plus they got it out very quick.

EDIT: It just got here and I already put it on! Easy install and looks great! Even better I love the feel in hand of the slimmer handguard. Just make sure the front is pushed all the way forward and the back slips right in then.
