In 1873, Colt’s single-action Army (SAA) revolver became the Army’s standard sidearm. Cavalry troopers were armed with the new revolvers. Lawmen and outlaws alike were quick to adopt the handy new 6-shooter which earned the nickname “Peacemaker.”The single-action Army was most widely produced with a color case-hardened frame and blued barrel. Meanwhile, a nickel-plated version was issued to Indian scouts. And a bright charcoal blue finish was available from the factory. But with years of use, the old 6-guns took on a well-handled soft gray patina.

The legend of Jesse James as the Robin Hood of the Old West endures to this day, to the point that ballads have been written in his memory. As a fierce outlaw, he owned a whole panoply of revolvers, so picking one as “his gun” would be all but impossible. The short stroke hammer features 20% less travel when compared to a standard Single Action Army, and is extra wide for enhanced cocking manipulation. The hammer is also lower to accommodate an uninterrupted sight picture, and a custom mainspring delivers a smooth trigger pull.

The Colt Single Action Army Revolver was first introduced to U.S. Troops in July of 1873 as a replacement for sidearm for the older 1860 percussion cap revolver. The Single Action Army was immediately popular among the soldiers that used them, who valued their formidable stopping power, high accuracy, and easy to maintain construction. These revolvers quickly found their way into the hands of civilians, lawmen, and outlaws alike who recognized the Single Action Army’s superior design.

Teddy Roosevelt led a charmed life before, during, and after his time as the 26th President of the United States. As a young man, he spent time as a cowboy in the Dakota Territory hunting buffalo and running a ranch. Later on, he served as New York City’s police commissioner and then Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy, before forming and leading the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment better known as “The Rough Riders” in the Spanish-American War. His reputation and exploits gained even more public attention as he became further involved in American politics.

In 1871, an employee from Colt by the name of Charles Richards was awarded a patent for converting Colt percussion models to breech loading cartridge revolvers. The Richards cartridge conversion was an instant success. On July 2nd, 1872, William Mason, another employee from Colt, was awarded a patent for an improvement to the Richards model. As percussion parts ran short, the 1860 Richards-Mason barrel was changed from the profile of the earlier percussion model, to the sleek profile found on the 1871-72 Open Top.
